A Family Photo Session At Jardin des Plantes in Toulouse

Occitanie, France

When the Kids Are Not in the Mood (And That’s Fine)

Let’s start with the truth. This spring family photo session at Jardin des Plantes in Toulouse did not begin with excited children running into my arms ready to “have fun.”

They had just woken up from a nap. They were shy. They were unsure.
And there was a camera pointed at them by someone they had never met before.

Honestly? Completely reasonable reaction.

They stayed glued to their parents at the beginning. No smiles. No big energy. Just cautious side-eyes and that very clear “I am not sure about this” expression.

And I loved it. Because this is real life.

Step One: Do Absolutely Nothing Dramatic

When children are shy, the worst thing you can do is try to hype them up.

So we didn’t.

We walked slowly through Jardin des Plantes. We talked. We looked at flowers. We let them stay close. No pressure to look at me. No “say cheese.” No awkward posing.

For the first part of this family photo session in Toulouse, most of the images were quiet and close. Kids tucked into their parents. Small hands holding tightly. Lots of observing.

It felt more like a Sunday afternoon walk than a photoshoot.

Perfect.

The Slow Warm-Up

Here’s what usually happens during outdoor family photography in Toulouse, especially with kids who are standing in front of a complete stranger, trying to figure out what on earth is going on.

Nothing…
Nothing…
Nothing…

And then, tiny shifts.

One child starts looking around instead of at the ground. The other forgets about the camera for three whole seconds.
A parent whispers something funny.

And suddenly we have a moment.

Not a big dramatic one. Just a real one.

That’s what happened here. There was no big transformation scene. Just a gradual “okay, maybe this is safe.”

And once that happens, everything changes.

Why Shy Kids Make the Best Photos

This might sound strange, but shy and sleepy children often create the most intimate images.

They stay close. They reach for their parents more. They express themselves in small, subtle ways instead of performing.

During this spring session at Jardin des Plantes, some of my favorite frames are the quiet ones. A child half-hiding behind a hand. A serious little face studying the world. A parent instinctively pulling them closer.

That kind of connection cannot be staged.

When families tell me, “Our kids are really shy” or “our toddler is really not in the mood,” I genuinely don’t worry.

As a family photographer, I don’t need children to be outgoing. I just need them to be themselves.

Spring Was on Our Side

The timing helped.

Spring at Jardin des Plantes is ideal for a family photo session in Toulouse. The light is soft, the trees are full but not heavy, and the park feels open without being chaotic.

The gentle light matched the mood of the afternoon. Calm. Unrushed. No harsh shadows, no pressure.

By the end of the session, the children were not suddenly wild and energetic.

They were simply more comfortable.

And honestly, that’s better.

What This Session Really Shows

This wasn’t a high-energy, Pinterest-perfect family shoot. It was something better.

It was a family navigating a slightly sleepy afternoon. Parents being patient. Kids needing time. Everyone adjusting together.

And that’s exactly what this season of life looks like sometimes.

If you’re considering a family photo session in Toulouse but you’re worried your children won’t “cooperate,” let me say this clearly: they don’t have to.

We work with real moods. Real personalities. Real timing. And the photos will reflect that.
